Everytime I try and start most of my programs (MusicMatch, Windows Media Player, Easy CD Creator, Quicktime) I get an error that says: "the program" has caused a general protection fault in MMSYSTEM.DLL. Every single one of the programs has the fault in the MMSYSTEM.DLL driver. What is this and what can I do to get rid of the problem? Please help me Ive been going crazy for about 2 months now !

What OS are you using? Do you have the installation CD for it? Have you attempted to re-install the OS on-top of the current OS load? A+, MCP, MCP+I, MCSE Windows NT 4.0, MCSE Windows 2000 Early Acheiver with Security Emphasis

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given and if you like my advice, please mark it as helpful.

Well, firt step - find the MMSYSTEM.DLL file, rightclick on it, choose properties and see what is the version of the file. One of the programs you installed may have replaced the file with wrong version for you OS.
Here is what I have:
- on my win95b system it is 101K, dated 8/24/1996 11:11 AM, version 4.0.095;
- on my win98se system it is 106K, dated 4/23/1999 10:22 PM, version 4.03.1998;
- on my win2000pro system it is 68K, dated 12/6/1999 4:00 PM, version 3.10.0.103

If you have the wrong version, just replace the file with the file from your original install media.

Good luck.

I am running Windows 95 4.00.950 B and my MMSYSTEM.DLL file is version 4.03.1998 105K. I've run my setup and nothing has changed. The life is the same and the errors are the same. Please don't tell me I have to reinstall the entire O.S.! If there is ANYTHING else please tell me, I'm trying everything out there. Thanks for everyone's help so far !

A posibility:

Error Messages in Mmsystem.dll or Rundll32

----------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 95
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

-----------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
You may receive random general protection (GP) fault error messages in Mmsystem.dll. You may also receive one of the following error messages:

Rundll32 - This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

Rundll - This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
Clicking the Details button reveals a message similar to one of the following:
RUNDLL32 caused a General Protection Fault in module MMSYSTEM.DLL

RUNDLL caused a General Protection Fault in module MMSYSTEM.DLL at 000a:00000032
This error message is more likely to occur after you use the Add New Hardware tool in Control Panel.

CAUSE
This problem can occur if the "drivers=mmsystem.dll" line is missing from the [boot] section of the System.ini file.

RESOLUTION
To correct this problem, follow these steps:

Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to edit the System.ini file.

Add the following line to the [boot] section of the file:

drivers=mmsystem.dll

Save and then close the System.ini file.

Restart your computer.

As you can see from my post above the file you have is from win98 version. That may or may not matter, but it is worth a shut comparing to reinstall.
Get your installation cd and get the right DLL from it using "extract.exe" command or winzip. MMSYSTEM.DLL is in win95_11.cab file. Copy the DLL to c:\windows\system directory (backup the existing file just in case). You may have to restart in DOS mode to do that.

Good luck.
