Hi,

I'm running Windows 95 with 4GB of Hard Disk, 352 MB of RAM, IE 5.5 and I experience frequent freeze ups throughout the day. Does windows 95 have some Debug utility or file that I can use to find out which program is causing Windows 95 to lock up? Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this problem is much appreciated

Regards,
Hind

You can try Process Explorer and Regmon from A thought about this locking up though: Does the machine have IE4's Active desktop installed?
If so, try turning active desktop off, then seeing if this makes a difference.
This has led me many times before to wipe and reinstall machines without reinstalling it - because I have found it is inherently unstable. Just install IE5.5 after a reinstall - you only get active desktop if you install IE4.x

Has this just started happening? One cause is bad hardware. Another is win95 is not a very good operating system - particularly if you want to do more than one thing at a time. Also, some combinations of software installed can cause problems like these.

Windows 95 does have the same Scan Disk and Disk Defragmenter utilities and other Windows. Its best to start the comptr in the safe mode, by tapping the F5 key as the comptr starts up. That gets you into the safe mode.

Now, disable any screen saver and then go to Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools and run the Disk Scan and Disk Defragmenter.

Also, open the Internet Explorer, choose the Advanced Tab and then Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings Button. On the next window click the Empty Folders button.

Restart the comptr.
