For no apparent reason, one of our Win95 systems 'hangs' when it gets to the first closing down screen. Instead of the message 'It is now safe to turn of your system' etc, it hangs on the screen prior to this. Sometimes it just re-boots. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you
When you say "one of our" I will assume you are connected to a LAN of some sort. If this is the case, the user will need to logout of the LAN connection and then shut down the machine.

RE: Close-Down Problem
Many times, this problem is associated with network setups. To prove this, first note the current
settings of your network card, then remove it from Windows. This will also remove other network
components. See if the machine shuts down properly. If so, set-up your network components
again, preferably, as Windows is starting, it will detect new hardware. See if this works.

I have found that similar problems also occur when Windows 95/98 is unable to issue the chosen 'Exit Windows' wav due to invalid or corrupt sound cards settings. i.e. If the IRQ settings are incorrect or the driver in use is invalid. Other symptons are no volume control on the desktop etc. and therefore this is most frequently found when completing the first install steps (set up) but can result from the automated Plug & Play changes to sound card or other device settings which result in a conflict (commonly IRQ 5).
