Windows 8 WiFi appears to fall over when dialling PPTP VPN

I have seen a couple of these lately:

Windows 8 & 8.1 seem to lose their wireless networking for a few seconds when dialling a PPTP connection.

You can dial it a few times and each time you lose connectivity to your WiFi but if you persist it will log onto the VPN eventually.

Has anyone else seen this or know what might be causing it?
