Isn't this really being called "Update 1" implying the possibility of more to come?

Yes, the next update will make Windows 8 look just like Windows 7 again. And the world rejoiced............

I wouldn't count those chickens before they're hatched. The screenshots I've seen show a stripped down Start Menu with a bunch of Metro tiles added. I'd expect all sorts of things to throw you back into the Metro overlay screen.

Actually, at their BUID conference this week it appears that Microsoft did announce that the next update to Windows 8.1—presumably Update 2—will herald the return of a proper Start menu, as well as the ability to run Modern UI apps in windows on the desktop (which I've previously muttered about).

Frankly Update 1 seems to be a bit of a stopgap

I'll believe it when I see it given the level of steadfastness that Microsoft has expressed about NOT returning to the old ways.

That was 8.1 you installed. There is another update coming, confusingly named Windows 8.1 Update 1
I don't see anything about a "traditional-ish" start button.

It's too late for Windows 8 for me. It's dead to me.

No, I already have 8.1 installed, and since I still have an alive Technet account, I grabbed the 8.1 update 1 download weighing in at 770Mb.

OS Name Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro
Version 6.3.9600 Build 9600

this is the download from technet

Not sure anyone claimed there would be.

I believe they (Microsoft) intend to create a Start Button in the next major update for Windows 8.1.

Yep, as per my post 4 Apr 14 10:22

nothing new with a start menu. i removed start 8 and the start menu was still windows 8.1 style. seems the start menu will be back in next update.

Waiting.................................. Waiting........................... Not for me personally, but to keep my sanity when working on other PCs.

And...as of this update Windows 8.1 got end-of-lifed. Basically install Update 1 or else.

Computerworld Article said:
Earlier this week, Microsoft shipped Windows 8.1 Update (8.1U), adding that to obtain future updates, including fixes for vulnerabilities distributed each month on "Patch Tuesday," Windows 8.1 users had to install 8.1U.

"Failure to install this Update will prevent Windows Update from patching your system with any future updates starting with updates released in May 2014," Microsoft said.

May 13 is the first Patch Tuesday that will require 8.1U.

I'm sure the corporate world loves getting forced onto a 330MB service pack (basically what it was) within a month's time frame (if they want to keep getting updates). *sarcasm*

It is not possible for anyone to acknowledge truth when their salary depends on them not doing it.

Wow - that's a crazy aggressive/early date for requiring a patch in a new operating system. For example, they didn't un-support Windows XP with SP1 for a long time. Hoping all the corporate types have something better than sneaker net to roll out the updates. Manually doing so is the pits.
