I've looked in several other forums and I'm beginning to think that there's no solution for this.

On the start menu, I have Word 2007. It was keeping track of my recent items (i.e., when I clicked on the right side of the Word icon, recent items would come up). I started and completed several new documents and the old documents still stayed there; no new documents showed up.

del /F /Q %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations\*

del /F /Q %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations\*

That is the batch file one website had. I ran it and the recent items completely disappeared off the Word icon. (They're still available on the right side of the start menu.)

How do I get my recent items back?

How do I make Word open maximized? (Yes, I already set it to maximized in the properties.)

Thanks.

I don't follow your explanation of the problem, but that just may be me. Is it a problem with the Recent Items that is on the right pane of the Start Menu, or is it a problem with the recent Word documents that have been opened in Word and would show in the Word program's File/ Recent (2010 terminology).

Would you like to link to a screenshot of what you are having problems with, As they say, a picture is worth a thousand Words, no pun intended.

Sites like this allow for uploading .jpg's.

Is your problem something that can be corrected via System Restore. Is it something that can be corrected in Word via the Help, Detect and Repair?

Do you have this problem in Safe Mode, or in Normal Mode if you use a different user?

Full disclosure: I have no idea who runs the above website.

Anyway, what this post shows is what I tried. Believe me, I've checked every menu and clicked everything that would allow me to show recent items.

Thank you very much for your time.

Why is the Word jump list not showing up?

Have you tried unpinning the Word shortcut from the Start Menu, logging off, or rebooting, and then pinning it back to the Start Menu?

Do you have any problems accessing this folder? Is the Recent folder or AutomaticDestinations populating as you open files?

C:\Users\usernamexxxx\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent, or the super hidden folder, C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.

Thanks, Linney.

None of this worked.

From what I'm reading on various forums, this is a problem that Microsoft hasn't figured out how to solve yet.

I believe it may be a problem with nonexistent shortcuts (to recent items of Word) that stops Word from displaying in the Start Menu. I believe the function may return when the shortcuts are fixed?

I wish I knew how to fix that problem if indeed it is a correct diagnosis. One interesting bit of evidence that may support my theory is that the problem fixed itself (for me) after I received a message similar to "The shortcut does not exist do you want Windows to delete it". Answering "yes" solved my problem with Word recent items.
