We have just purchased our first Windows 7 notebook. It cannot see our SBS 2003 Server. It has no problems connecting to the internet.

I believe that the reason may be that our router is the DHCP server, not the SBS Server...

Any ideas on how to get it to see the SBS Server so that I can add the new notebook to the domain?

Thanks very much,

John

what happens when you use a direct path to the server? for example, click start > search > 'run' > [type] \\192.168.0.100

Where 192.168.0.100 is the IP address of the server.

You may have name resolution issues, but that's no surprise given the network layout.

To answer your main question, you need to have the laptop use the SBS Server's IP address as DNS server.

Let the SBS Server hand out IP via DHCP. Disable DHCP on the router/Internet gateway. Reboot the SBS Server or restart the DHCP server service. Then disconnect the LAN cable from the laptop for about 20 seconds and then plug back in.

Then try joining the domain.
