I have a volume license of Win 7 Pro installed on a client pc and it was activated before pc was delivered. Now it is saying "windows 7 copy not activated" any insight to this would be great.

This Microsoft download will try and repair the licensing components of Windows 7.

See if you can download the mgadiag.exe mentioned in this post.

Retail bought Windows 7 not genuine, my MGAdiag report

This might be the link to it?

Please Run MGA Diagnostic Before Posting

Contacting the Activation Center via Microsoft Telephone Support might be an option too.

Have you installed or removed any hardware that might have caused you problems and upset Activation?

Hopefully I won't have to worry about this, but innevitably someone will get this issue, and come to me for help. So, with that, I say thanks to linney for the reference links all in one post!

Also, as a side note, a personal suggestion I'd make is this: Because of the way much of Microsoft's Activation software works these days, I'd suggest not downloading the one optional update they released that is an "anti-piracy" type download. Based on the issues they had back with XP and/or Vista after a related update there, I'd imagine you'll eventually see issues on Windows 7. On XP and Vista, it was required. On Windows 7, supposedly, it will always be optional.

Here are a couple of references:

It sounds good on the surface, but I could very well see where it would lead to making legit software look illegit.

Oh, just to be sure - one other question:

Did you reinstall the system from a DVD? If so, make 100% sure that it's the exact same disk matching the Windows Key. If you use a Pro disk that isn't a volume license pro disk, then it very well may not work correctly with the volume license ID. If someone else reinstalled it before you got it, I'd verify with them.
