When I boot my machine I get this message
redir

Does anyone recognize it? There is no indication what sends the message, and it does not seem to inhibit anything.

Autoruns is more detailed and easier to view startup items than msconfig.

Hi guitarzan, msconfig does not show anything unusual, and my weekly MalwareBytes run was clean.

goombawaho, what is Autoruns?

strongm, how do I find these event logs?

Thanks for the assistance, folks, but please do not assume that I was born knowing the things you know about computers. Sadly, this is not so. [banghead] I have to rely on the guidance of others. [reading]

Event logs - from the prompt, type eventvwr.

Hi xwb

There is a regular error at startup which Event Viewer shows as
this dialog.

I don't know what this thing is, or even if I need it.

Would someone please explain for me?

Thanks

Akamai is a peer to peer streaming program that is used by other programs like Netflix that stream video, etc. to your computer. You may have to take ownership of the directory in question before the program can install properly. If you uninstall it, you may also have to uninstall the program that installed it.

It seems to be fixed, and here is the story for anyone following this thread.

I run Google Talk as a modern version of Biff (who remembers Biff?). I recently had my Gmail account hacked and changed the password, forgetting that the automatic login to Google Talk uses the same password. As a consequence, Google Talk could not log in automatically and sent me the message (above). Changing the password on Google Talk seems to have solved the problem - leastways, I am not getting that warning dialog at the moment.

Shame on Google [curse] for not specifying that it was Talk that sent the message. It's pretty hard to fix something if you do not know what is causing the problem.

Anyway, all seems to be well now. Thanks to the folk who offered suggestions. [2thumbsup]
