I can't get the "firewall with advanced security" to work on Windows 7 machines through group policy.

The existing policy has settings for the Windows XP firewall which are working OK.

I followed the Microsoft TechNet guidance on the additional settings required for Win7 ( but where it says, in step 4, "note that the Firewall State setting is On (Recommended)" our clients stay resolutely at "Off".

I have checked that the GP modifications have replicated to all the DNS servers, tried GP updates, logging off and on and rebooting. All to no avail.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks, SteveB.

Check you GPO settings for:
Computer Config > Administrative Templates > Network > Network connections > Windows Firewall > Domain Profile > Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections = Disabled

Look under your Default Domain Policy and the Domain Controller Policy under ComputerConfig>Windows Settings>Security Settings>System Services and see if this has been configured as disabled for the Windows Firewall Service

Thanks for your reply TechyMcSe2k.

I had checked the applicable GPO, which was configured correctly. Your response prompted me to check all the GPOs from the top down and I found one that applied only to my OU which was disabling the firewall !

Problem fixed.

Thanks, SteveB.
