Hi

I have had this happen a couple of times.

I start showing that I have no internet connection.

I switched to XP boot and my connection is alive and well.

After a lot of fooling around I disabled the present connection and then tried to reestablish a new one.

That didn't work at first but eventually I was able to get the connection working again. The second time without recycling my router.

Anyone have any ideas why this is happing.
Windows didn't have any problems setting up the connection initially.

I have had this problem several more times.

When I would run diagnostics I would get an "Error 651 the connecting device has reported an error" after creating a new connection I finally got to a point where it said that I was connected but I couldn't actually connect to anything.

I finally deleted all the connections that showed up "Broadband connection and Broadband connection 2" Disabled the device, and started over creating a connection from scratch, again.

It is working now but I'm not sure that it will keep doing so, since I have been at this point before.

I'm connected through a Linksys router to Comcast.

Does anyone have an idea why the connection works for a while and then fails?

I'm not going to mess with anything now, just leave it alone and see what happens.

Which version of 7 are you running. The Beta or the Release Candidate version?

It might be that the drivers for your network card aren't completely stable.

When It happens try looking at what IPCONFIG reports.

Try renewing the IP lease.
Is there anything in Event viewer that may be relevant?

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Hi

I am running Windows 7RC.
I just downloaded and installed the latest drivers for my nVidia NForce series 4 network controller.

What appears to happen is that every time I log out the connection is dead when I come back.

If I open Network Sharing it shows no internet connection.
If I then go to Change Adapter setting and fool around long enough, running diagnose and disabling and restoring the adapter then the connection is eventually restored.

I haven't found event viewer yet, I'm still figuring out where stuff is at in this program.

Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer Its been there since Windows XP.

Looks like its not getting re-enabled when you log back in.

Could be a power option. Turning it off to conserve power, and not turning it back on.

got to Device Management and right Click on your Network Adapter, then if there is a Power Management Tab click there, and un-check "Allow the computer to turn off this device to conserve power"

Hi

Here is what I have found.
When I log in there is no connection.

If I open The network sharing center and then click on Change Adapter Settings then click disable this connection followed by Diagnose this Connection, the connection is reestablished.

I will now go and follow the information above and see if I can find a reason or some command that I can find that turns it off.

I'll report back later.

Thanks again...

I checked and found that the Power Management was set to not allow the computer to turn of the Network adapter.

I found no messages in the log files for the time period that I log in other then errors about not being able to connect to my anti virus updates etc.

I don't know where I should look for something that applies directly to the Network Adapter.

I read the info about the built in firewall, but I'm not sure that applies since the connection seems to stay established once it is connected.

The problem seems to be that Window 7 does not try to establish the connection when it boots or already believes that the connection is there.

I'll keep digging but at least I know how to get it going quickly now.

Device manager showed no problem other the my video capture card (TV Wonder Pro)which I have already found there are no Vista drivers for.

That's as far as I have gotten and it's time for bed.

Hi

I have done a lot more research and have found that a lot of people are having this problem.

No solution so far other then my work around.

If anyone has any ideas I'll give it a try.

A patch came through today from Microsoft and my connections works fine now.

Following on from the bad news in your other thread

Where did my system restore points go?
thread1726-1551244

Are the faults that you mention, that you read about on the Internet, confined to just Nvidia NForce series 4 network controllers?

What was the Patch that you thought might have solved the problem, do you have a KB number or link?

These setup such as Itunes and Adobe (with Internet ability) that you also mention, are you installing those via the right-click "Run As Administrator" option?

One expensive option available to you is to swap your Nvidia card for another less troublesome brand, or try using Wireless in some way or means.

At least you still have your workaround to fall back on.

Hi Linney

No problems don't seem to be just the nVidia nForce 4 but a lot of them are.

There are many people posting on the Microsoft Windows 7 forum with this problem but no one solution.

One thing seems to work for one person and something else of nothing for another.

As for the patch I just happened to open the see details while it was doing an automatic update and see that is said something about nVidea nForce Network Controllers but I didn't get the details.

My computer did work for a couple of days after that until I installed first Adobe Illustrator and then I-Tunes.

After I used restore to go back to before the illustrator install it worked again. I haven't been able to get it to work an again (with out a lot of fooling around with it) since I installed I-Tunes even though I rolled back the that installation too.

I guess I'm not installing the software as administrator.
I just put in the disk and run through the install the way I always have.

The weird thing is that when I go to Device Manager and fool around with it I may have to do it 3 or 4 times before it takes. Disabling, re-abling, updating driver, disabling etc.

Eventually it decides to connect.

It might be the last "thump" that does it.

I had a Wireless Network Card that had one of those small aerials at the rear which had come a bit loose. It would connect and not connect as the mood took it. Funny thing was that it would connect every time with the aerial removed, mind you it was only over a distance of a few feet. Anyway tightening up properly solved my problem. The moral of that story is check your hardware too.

In another case, rats or non-computer mice had chewed along the edge of Network Cables, just enough to produce an intermittent fault. At least with a dog it usually chews the cable and swallows it so it's easy to find.

Hi

The controller always connects when I log into Windows XP.
I have never had any problems with it at all.

What I have discovered now it that when I can't get it to work, I can uninstall it in Device Manager, then reboot the computer.

When it restarts it is forced to reinstall the Network Controller and the connection comes up live.

Sometimes just disabling and reinabling it will do it but only in Device Manager not in the Network Sharing Center.

I'm about to give up on it and just wait for a fix to come along. Once I get it started it works until I shut it off or log out. Since I'm not the only one with the problem I assume that eventually it will get fixed.

There has to be something that works in XP that doesn't work in 7 for some people. For that matter most people have a connection after the installation and it fails later.
I only saw a few post from people whose connection was dead from the start.

My last post on this subject.

I have come to the conclusion that fixing this is not within my skill set.

I have figured out that before I turn my computer off I need go to Device Manager and uninstall the Network Controller.

When the computer starts up in the morning it detects and installs the device and the connection comes up live.

So that's what I will do until a fix comes along.

Thanks for the input guys. It's not often that I can't find an answer here but I think this one is up to Microsoft to fix.

Checking that other link you supplied, the most recent post, at this point in time, suggested this. Have you tried that solution?

"If you have nVIDIA ethernet controllers, and you have nVIDIA Forceware Network Access Manager installed, uninstall it and restart your computer. It worked for me, although in my case the problem reoccurred after the restart, but every restart after that was flawless - no network problems. I don't know if that will be the case for everyone else, but I'm confident that this is a universal work-around".

Hi

As far as I can see I don't have it installed.
At least I don't see it in the programs list.

I'll check it out and see if maybe it is something that doesn't show there.
