Hi all.

I did not install anything yesterday but today I found a bunch of cab*.* and kb*.* files in the recycle bin (deleted but not by me). Can I safely remove these files? I thought cab and kb files are windows OS files.

Also, just got a new router but it seems to have slowed down my laptop. Any help here too will be greatly appreciated. I have a Toshiba x64 pc, 2.00Ghz with 4GB memory. I hope that is enough system info. The internet speed is 100mps or something like that, but that is on me desktop. The router is run through the ISP setting on the desktop. When first setup you could snap your fingers and the browser window was on screen and running. Now both are slow.

Thanks in advance.

There was a few windows 7 updates pushed on Tuesday night, and those could be the install files. You could always google a few to see what they are. .cab files are Microsoft "cabinet" files, think of them as a .zip archive. The router would only affect the laptop, on the internet, or during file transfers on the home network. It could have an adverse effect on the speed, if the new router is not as good as the old one? different chips can have compatibility issues, and different routers can be more or less susceptible to environment noise that can effect distance and speed. What is the old router, make and model, what is the new make and model. Not all 802.11G or 802.11 N routers are the same.

The above system info is for my laptop: Toshiba
My PC is a x86 Family 15 Model 1 1594MHz
with 512MB Memory, XP Pro.

I did not have an old router. The new router is a Netgear WNR1000 using 150GB(?) speed. As I said, when the router was first setup, snap your fingers and all was running fast. Today, it takes about 2 minutes to even connect and another 2 to load. Something has gone south.

Can I delete those files in the bin without doing harm to my laptop?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried power cycling the router/modem? Have you been downloading a bunch of movies/music/pics? Any antivirus or antimalware installed? If you do a "ping google.com -t" in the command prompt do you see any dropped responses?

512 MB of ram is too low for XP with service pack 3, should add 1 GB at the least, replace the 512MB with 2 1GB ram modules for the best response. Have you run a program like ccleaner to clear out all the old unused internet files, that could be slowing down your system? The 150 is the type of 802.11N implementation. It means it only has a 1x1 antenna configuration, and only allows 150 megabits per second throughput in both directions. Any new devices, or devices that were no being used when the router was set up causing interference? i.e. ceiling fan,new phone, windows fan,air conditioner, air purifier. Try moving the router to a different location if possible, also, who setup the router? was the password changed from the default password, and was there a pass code for wpa2 installed, maybe a neighbor is piggybacking your signal, and that will cause a slowdown.

The ping did not drop any I could see.

My grandson has the router set on top of the pc cpu (box) with a 4 port usb adapter next to it. There is only my laptop and an ipod using the router other than the pc's ISP provider. (? if I stated that all well enough)

It has been a long time since I've been in the computer tech world, so bear with me and tell me in simple terms what you mean with your feedback. I have not kept up with the computer lingo so most of what you tell me goes over my head. :)

The internet seems to be working better today. I put in a password on the router but it does not ask for it when turned on. How do I set that up so others cannot piggyback?

As far as adding memory to my pc I don't think I can add any more. It was totaled out when I bought it. Have any sugesstions on a new pc? And is there any way I can take the programs I use now on this pc and put on a new pc without reinstalling all of them? [I doubt it]

Thanks to you all for your helps. I'm doing my best.

[link ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/WNR1000_SM_WW_23Jan09.pdf]Manual[/url] Manual for the router. If you type in in the address bar of your browser, and it should ask for the login information: User name: admin password: password is the default. This is what needs to be changed, because anyone can try the factory defaults, and log into the router, and set it up so they can use it. On page 21 of the pdf it goes through how to setup the SSID and security settings of the router.

When purchasing a new computer, they come preinstalled with a lot of programs, some programs are rubbish and some are worthwhile. You'll just have to look around at what is available in new computers, and read all the available reviews. Allegedly Windows 8 is going to become available in the next few months but that seems more suited to Tablets rather than Desktops or Laptops, on those latter two hardware systems your probably better off with Windows 7 as an operating system.

How to use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate files and settings from one Windows-based computer to another Windows Vista (or Windows 7) based computer

Description of Windows Easy Transfer for Windows Vista

Transfer files and settings from another computer

Programs have to be installed and the vast majority of programs have to be installed in to any new machine. Some third party software can bypass such an inconvenience if you want to look at it.

"It may seem confusing, but here’s the solution: PCmover Upgrade Assistant. XP to Windows 7? No problem! Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional? Yep, we do that. How about Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit? Of course!"
