Windows 7 and Access with large queries running - can you multitask

In a corporate environment when using XP and Access 2007, when I have a large query using large linked tables running, it seems to take all the resources of the PC. I am unable to alt-tab.
I can go to "my computer" and do lite things, but cannot open a second database.
Is anyone using Windows 7 in a corporate environment and does that machine resource issue go-away because the machine is able to use all the available memory? Or does Access behave like it always has?

Thanks

What does single thread mean in this instance? Does that mean that it will still hog the machine resources? Thx
