I've been a bit too busy of late but finally have a moment to share. I finally got around to buying more RAM It was very little extra to get 8GB than 4GB so that is what I did. I therefore now have 12GB of RAM.

The net results can be summarized as:-

NO benefits regarding boot up speed.

NO benefits in light usage.

Significant benefits when copying large files.

Signification benefits when using Panorama Factory to stitch more than 20 pics in a 360 deg panorama. (takes about a 1/2 the time)

Significant benefits when running virtual machines as I can now give them 4GB each!

Currently running 12 apps and still have 6GB of RAM free though!

I'm sorry I don't have the time to give more details right now - like numbers or timings.

To conclude :-

For light users, 4GB is enough

For most users 8GB is plenty

Only those with the most RAM hungry apps will need more that 12GB!

It also depends on how many cores your processor has and whether the program you are running is capable of making use of the multicore architecture.
