Hi All,
Not too sure where to start but when I turn on my computer I get the HP splash screen for about 20 seconds and then I get a black screen with the cursor flashing in the top left hand side for around 2 minutes. I keep thinking it is something in my startup but I don't know what to even look for. Not sure what has changed as it was never always like this. I have run msconfig and looked in the startup screens but not sure what I am looking at. Also looked at the processors in the msconfig screen and it shows 1. I have a hpe-595a pavillion Elite computer running windows 7 64 bit.
Regards Debbie

It sounds like what can sometimes happen with hotfixes that Microsoft rolls out. When it happened to mine, I tried doing the repair option, but it always told me it could find no issue, and Windows booted up okay. I found that if I did a restore to an earlier time, and chose a couple of days before it happened, it fixed it.

Have you checked the Booting order in the Bios to make sure that the order is something like CD/DVD, Hard drive, and then the other options like USB, and any Network boot. If the hard drive isn't number 2 then the machine might be looking for some other booting device before it gets to the hard drive.

Does it boot correctly if you start in Safe Mode?

Startup Repair.

Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent Windows from starting.

If you remove all easily detached hardware such as USB's etc., does it then boot correctly?

debful,
From your description, it seems like Windows will eventually load. You just have to wait 2 minutes before it proceeds to the Windows 7 startup logo. If that's the case, then I agree with linney. There might be other devices listed before the hard drive in the boot options. Usually, that's not a problem when those devices don't contain bootable information, but you might want to try listing your hard drive first anyway to troubleshoot. Also make sure you don't have a CD or DVD inserted in the disc drive.

Hit F10 at startup on HP laptops to get into the BIOS settings and view your boot options.
