I run windows 7 32bit. I need a very sharp and clear monitor due to my eyes. Seen a 4k 24" monitor but have been told my present computer will not work with a 4k monitor. My graphics card has a DVI-D output which would mean I would have to use a converter from HDMI to DVI-D. Again I have been told different things such as it would work and that it would not. I use a KVM switch between 2 computers and that uses a DVI-D output.

Can anyone advise. Also, I have been told that QuadHd monitors might and might not work.

Normally, it would depend on the video card, or chip you have to determine if it is capable of doing 4k or 3840 x 2160 or QuadHD, true 4k is 4096 x 2160 but no panels are made with this resolution, that I am aware of. The next part is it depends on what you are doing at 4k, browsing the web, regular windows applications should have little trouble with a machine made in the last few years with at least a an I3 cpu an integrated video. If you are playing video games, or doing 3d modeling, you will need a much more expensive video card. As for the cable, an DVI-D cable is rated for 4K output, but is the DVI ports on the computer rated that high, or is it a DVI-I or DVI single, it would be 1980 x 1200 resolution that could be achieved. But the biggest single limiting factor in your setup, as far as can be determined with the very sparse information and specs given, would be the KVM. Not knowing the model of KVM, it is very hard to determine what the max resolution that it supports are. Most of the lower cost units, stop at 1920 x 1200.

I use the Aten CS1782a KVM. It does 2560 x 1600 @60Hz Dual Link. At the moment my monitor is using 1920x1200.
I understand that 4k is best with larger screens so I am now searching for a quick ms. on a 24" IPS screen. There are so many monitors that it is very difficult to pick the right one.

So the KVM will not do 4k. Do you know what video card and/or CPU you have? and motherboard, or model of PC if it is an HP or Dell or other OEM.

If DCI, a 4K monitor has a resolution of 4096x2160. If it is UHD1 then it is 3840x2160. Are you working on the cmd prompt a lot? On a 24" monitor at those resolutions, the text will be tiny unless you enlarge them. If you enlarge them, what is the point of getting such a high resolution monitor: you may as well have a lower resolution monitor and not bother enlarging the text.

Would you be running at higher magnifications? If you are, then again, there is no point in getting a hi-res. Just run at a lower res and don't bother magnifying.

I used to have a manager who wanted a 1280x1024 screen but only ever ran it at 1024x768!

I was assuming that the more pixels the sharper the picture. As I need a clearer and larger image due to my eyes, I am looking at QHD or HD. I have found an AOC 25" Q2577pwq 5ms. This is in between the HD and 4k. I do also need an adjustable monitor with controls in the front.

My monitor at the moment is a Dell U2413 which I have had for about 4 years. I am finding the details on webs and letters not as sharp as I think it should be. If anyone knows if AOC monitors are any good I would be grateful for their comments as the reviews I have read seem to vary depending on the different sites. If anyone can also recommend a 24" monitor that would be very helpful.

The problem I have with AOC is not being able to switch it off. The on/off switch is on the bottom right and also acts as a rocker switch for menu selection. If you don't press it dead centre, the menu pops up. Also, since it is at the bottom of the screen, if you press too hard, the monitor lifts up so you have to hold it down with one hand and keep on pressing the switch until it finally switches off. Just leaving your finger on it doesn't do anything.

In the end, I just gave up and left the monitor on. Alternatively, you can switch it off at the mains if it is easily reachable.

The design may have changed since I got mine - if you are in a shop, ask the shop assistant to show you how to switch the monitor on and off. If he struggles switching it off, and gives you some crap excuse why it doesn't switch off it is the same model as mine.

I have ordered the AOC Q2577PWQ. Now waiting for it to be delivered. The model was released last August. The panel is made by LG which I know is a good make.

Thank you all for your help.

>the more pixels the sharper the picture

Unfortunately it isn't that simple
