ok heres what happened...
I had Windows 2000 installed and had been using it for a long time now. I went to upgrade to SP3 using windows update last night and when i restarted my computer after it was done... my hard drive doesnt work :(
it shows up in my computer and all but when i double click it to view the contents it says its not formatted and needs to be, so i decided to format my hard drive today and reinstall windows. First i installed Windows 98 and the hard drive worked fine... but when i upgraded to windows 2000 it says i need to format it. any ideas how i would fix it without formatting it? all my projects are on there and my website stuff! :(

?

You say you formatted it today, then installed Win98, then upgraded to Win2K.

Now, you want to avoid formatting it again because you will lose some stuff.

Didn't the first format delete all your stuff?

im sorry i forgot to say it was a secondary drive...
I keep my OS on a seperate drive so it doesnt take forever to format it. But what i dont understand is why it works on windows 98 and not 2000 after i installed sp3

Hello,

Sounds strange.

Have you run Computer management/Disk management under Win2K to see the status of your second drive ?

Yes ive run a few disk managements. The Hard Drive shows up there saying its FAT32 but windows says its fat... in the command promt (running in windows) it gives me this error :
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Im not sure what that is, but since it worked on Windows 98 and not 2000 i am formatting my drive with the OS and putting WIndows 98 on so i can backup my drive then format it.

you are going through too many steps.

thread779-436944 2k bootsector is corrupted.
Zeror or low level format to correct it.

Deadsoul, I have the same issue...I thought I lost the drive, but if I go into DOS and do a directory, it's there intact.

Please keep us informed as to your progress. I have a WD400 as a second drive (formatted as 30G). Guess I'll uninstall the SP3 and hope the drive comes back as it's not my system!!!
