Setup Windows 2008 as Terminal server, running among other programs, Office 2000. Accessing Office data locally was instant (Excel,Access, Word, Visio) but data retrieved from another 2008 server was taking minutes to open reasonably sized files.

Server Message Block 2.0
Had to turn off SMB 2.0, by adding Dword key SMB2, setting to 0 to disable it, on the network server. Turning it off on the Terminal server was not necessary. Network files now open instantly

Computer\Hkey_Local_Machine\CurrentControlSet\System\LanmanServer\Parameters\SMB2 set to 0

Likely this affects other MS office versions. Does not appear to slow other programs running on the network.

Nice work Microsoft.
