I've enabled Windows Backup on our 2008 Std Edition server. So far I am pretty impressed with it, I have dedicated a usb powered HDD as the volume for it to back up, have been able to restore simple files w/o any problems. My question is this;

SQL2008 also runs on this server, will Windows backup be able to make valid backups of the databases on the same server? Or should I also setup a maintenance job within SQL to make a backup of the databases into a new folder somewhere on the server?

I am new to SQL and its backups, please advise, thanks for reading!

No, Windows won't be able to backup the databases on the server. You'll need to setup a maintenance job within SQL to backup the databases to disk, then you can backup those files.
