Can Windows 2003 server be used as a personal operating system, like Windows XP, or is it soley a server system only?

Depend which way you like. Windows 2003 Server can be in Workgroup. If you want Windows 2003 become a domain more function just a normal workgroup

Thanks for the reply.

Before I change is there any advance over Windows XP which I presently use?

Win 2003 Server as a workstation client works OK. We kind of had to go there, as we've a lab with a rack of Dell 1750's used as clients in a domain, intended to be used (more or less)as rack-mountable "clones" of Dell Precision 450's .
We started with the intention of loading XP on these boxes, but as these are "servers", XP cannot be installed on these (Per OEM).
So, we installed default Win 2003 Standard, MS office XP, and some other apps, and tweaked some of the security settings to allow ftp downloads, etc.
Again, no problems here using these as AD clients.
