Hello,

I just set up a windows 2003 server on my network. The problem is the server dosent show up! I have port forwarding set up right. I can see the default page on the server itself by typing but not from any other pc on the network by typing http:192.168.2.last 3

Can anybody help! Please?

Seems like you are having 2 issues here, one the website is not accessable on the public internet and the other its not accessable on the private LAN, is that correct? Can you ping the server from one of the workstations on the LAN?

Correct, Please help. I cannot ping the server from any other pc on te network

There are 5 PC's on the network, I dont know about RRAS

i mean how many network cards are in the server, if more than one are they all configured? look at your services, is Remote Access Service running or disabled? im doing this without reference so i might be a hair off on the exact service name.

Sorry, There are 2. Im using #2 Yes its enabled and runing Thank you so much so far ;)

Have you patched the server yet? 2003 Server with SP1 upon initial installation does not permit any incoming connections until after you run Windows Update or otherwise specifically authorize it to accept them. This is done for security reasons.

Ok, im sure RRAS is whats causing your problems. Why do you have 2 nics and just give more info about how you have the server configured and why. I need to determine if you need RRAS. Since you stated you "port forwarded" i assume you have a router and dont have 1 nic connect to the internet and 1 nic connected to your LAN. if you uninstall RRAS i think you will fix both problems. I am guessing you installed RRAS by mistake when you installed the server and since you didnt know what it was im sure you arnt using it. you can uninstall it by going into add/remove programs, windows componets and remove it.

Hi,

I have no RRAS in my windows components list

lwcomputing, could you explain that a bit for me? ive installed 2k3 pre sp1 and R2 many times and never seen that, are saying 2k3 sp1 does that? never installed from media with sp1 on it. the reason im hitting rras so hard is i just fielded a problem where rras was installed by default or so it seemed and caused the same sort of issues bob is having. i just seem to be having a problem communicating what i mean to bob right now.

Read the link I posted - excerpts:

Post-Setup Security Updates is designed to help protect a new server installation from risk of infection between the time the server is first connected to the network and the application of the most recent security updates from Windows Update.

Post-Setup Security Updates is a user interface that appears the first time an administrator logs onto the new server and provides links for you to apply updates to your server and to configure automatic updates. Post-Setup Security Updates also informs the administrator that all inbound connections other than those specifically opened during setup or by policy settings, were blocked. If the administrator set exceptions to the firewall through Group Policy or by an unattended setup script, inbound connections assigned to these exceptions remain open.
and
Post-Setup Security Updates applies to Windows server administrators who are performing a full installation of Windows Server 2003 that includes Service Pack 1 or later (such as a slip-stream version of Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1)

Note: there are exceptions to this detailed in the link provided.

Geesh,

Now I cant even connect to teh internet with it :(. Says local area connection is 100mbps but the new IE ( I hate it BTW) wont even connect,, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

ahh so it applies only to media with sp1 on it, no wonder i hadnt seen that behavior. Im sorry bob, i have no clue how to help you so i will step out of this thread.

Can you provide more details? Like error messages, ping results from the server and to the server, event logs errors and information? Confirmation that you've run the Post Setup Security Updates - through the use of that wizard? Forget getting the website working on the server - lets make sure the more common, standard stuff is working... Windows file sharing, ping, etc.

Hi Bob,
Just read this thread, I'm a little confused, You can't connect to the server at all is that correct?
Can you get to the internet from the server?

Regards
Max
