Hey guys I have 1 Windows 2003 server which is a Domain controller for my domain. The server was purchased with 30 cals since we have 30 computers.

We just bought another Window 2003 server with NO CAl's...this server will also be accessed by the 30 computers that I have in the network....question is...do I need to buy an additional 30 Cals for this second server?? or do I need NOT buy any additional cals?? (just go to the licensing option in the new server and say it has 30 CAL's since my original server already has 30 cals)

Thanks guys

This can depend on the licensing mode you are using, per server, per user/per device mode
Typically Per user, per device mode is used, in one of these modes you simply have to have enough CALS of either user or device type to cover the amount of users or devices you have.

Per server is a concurrent connection type of license.

As I said usually per user or per device mode is used in which case you would not need to purchase more CALs, you can check which mode you are running in the licensing console.

Thanks for the information, I looked at the link that you provided and just to be clear this is what I understand:

Lets say I have one Windows XP Computer and 5 Windows 2003 servers...if the server's licensing mode is "Per Server" then I would need to purchase 5 cal's so that the Windows XP computer can access all 5 servers at the same time.....on the OTHER hand if the server's licensing mode is "Per User/Device" then I ONLY need to purchase 1 Cal and I would be able to access all 5 servers at the same time....is that correct??

That's it.

oh ok I will do that...will i have to make that change on every server that I have? or only on one server and the others will replicate and reflect the change??

Probably every server
