We are currently running windows 2003 NLB on 5 terminal servers that primarily run two large database driven applications.
The terminal servers each have two interface cards, but only one is currently in use for NLB. We are using multicast and the interfaces are on a layer 3 switch on the same vlan/subnet as our other servers.
Multicast traffic is a huge concern for me. I have read in a dual nic scenario you put all of your cluster interfaces in a hub/switch and uplink to minimize traffic and have all outgoing traffic going out the other NIC. My concern with this scenario is the uplink to the switch only bieng 1GB vs the 76G backplane of the switch.
My other thought was to create VLAN for the cluster interface and keep the secondary interfaces on the same VLAN as the application servers and have all outgoing traffic going out the secondary interface while all incoming traffic would be going through the cluster interface.
My biggest concern with the above scenario is that it might degrade performance with the cluster interfaces bieng on a seperate VLAN as the app servers. Also in this scenario, should I use Unicast or Multicast? Does it matter if they are on a seperate VLAN?
I also tried using Multicast with IGMP, but couldnt get a response from the load balanced cluster IP Address. I double checked my switch and IGMP snooping was enabled.
