I have a windows 2003 file server that is also our domain controller. I am having a few problems that just recently cropped up and I am wondering if anyone has any ideas. In addition I am also looking for some short term solutions.

The windows backup software is no longer working for one of my shares. I get drive is full or is write protected whenever I try to do a backup. Through my testing I have also noticed that I can no longer move files from that server to any other server or machines. I can however move files on the same server to different folders.

I have reset permissions on all the folders and ensured that the Admin has ownership of all folders but it is still not letting me do anything.

Anyone have any ideas?

A few things to check.

1. Is there free space available on the server? Moving files from folder to folder does ntohing but change the pointer. The space used remains the same. Use a COPY to verify functionality.

2. Are you backing up to disk or to tape? Are you sure the message is not that you have run out of space on the tape?

3. Verify the DNS settings on the bad server. Make sure that the NIC only lists local DNS servers. An improperly configured NIC could prevent network authentication.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Server 1 ( the one I am trying to backup and move files from) has 7.8gb of space left on the drive I am working on.
Server 2 has over 250gb of space available.

I have been backing up using windows backup utility to backup to a sharred network drive (another server {server 3}). That way I wouldn't have to spend the increased amount for backup software to backup remote drives. Then using the single server (3) to backup to a REV Autoloader 1000.

This worked great for quite some time, then for no apparent reason it stopped. I now, cannot even remove files from server 1 to another server as it gives me the error:

Cannot create or replace "File name": Access denied.
Make sure the disk is not full, write protected and that the file is not in use. (paraphrased).

I did not start trying to copy files until I had backup problems. The idea behind the copy was "Crap I need to copy this data to anther server ASAP since I cannot get a clean backup."

Any ideas is greatly appreciated.

Ok got the copy problem fixed. That was caused by a firewall setting....not sure how I missed that the first time I looked at it.

Settings on firewall are now all clear but I still am unable to backup. I have read on MS's site about a backup problem with windows 2003 server and that SP1 should have fixed it. It has apparently not fixed it or I am missing something else.

Any ideas?
