Hi

One of our 2003 DCs suddelnly hangs on the "applying computer settings" screen. File sharing works OK but that's about it. Even the event viewer service hasn't started. Nothing has been changed.

Any ideas?

I have a client that is experiencing this exact problem. It started this weekend, after a bad thunder storm that took out power. I have the system on a APC 1500 SmartUPS so it should have been protected. However, I am concerned about the cable modem. The power is plugged into the UPS, but not the coax cable itself.

What's interesting is it takes hours to logon even when starting in safe mode...the shutdown is just as painful.

I read a thread on another site:
This mentions NIC/TCP-IP issues.

OK, I noticed that terminal server wasn't operating in administrator mode and so the license had expired. This caused the server to time out on almost every service it had to start. Once I rebooted in fail safe mode and removed the terminal server, the problem was much less. Now the waiting was on the Veritas Backup Exec services to start. I reapplyed the acciount settings for these services andnow the problem was resolved.

Lesson learned: be carefull of the terminal server on W2K3 as it works a bit different than the one in W2K.

Does DNS point to the DNS server. If the DC is the DNS server does it point to itself. This will slow the DC if it is incorrect.
