Windows 2003 and NTBackup.exe

I am having constant backup issues using NTBackup.
Symptoms are mount failures at the beginning of the backup or during the backup. Also failure to backup where by after 33 mins the backup finishes and the backup log file is empty.
Has anybody come across this problem before.
