I have windows 2000 loaded on a laptop.I also have a desktop PC with windows XP.With that opperating system I can go to start then to run and type in msconfig and a list comes up allowing me to choose what programs I want to be loaded at start up. This makes that PC load quickly. The 2000 does not alow me to access through msconfig to do the same. How do I deside what programs are loaded at start up

You can edit the Run key in the registry under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. There's also a tool called Autoruns from Sysinternals that will show you what's loading at startup and allow you to edit.

You can copy msconfig.exe from Windows XP to your Windows 2000 machine and run it in the same way.

msconfig.exe is not licensed to be run on Windows 2000.

It might not be native to Win2K but according to Microsoft, who are happy to publish instructions on how to do so, it can be done.
I can vouch for that having done it myself whilst trying to stop a rogue process at start up on a Win2k machine.

I didn't say it couldn't be done. I said msconfig.exe is not licensed for use on Windows 2000. It was for W95 and XP, but not for W2K.

Licensed for W2K or not, MS say it can be done and I was merely pointing this out to someone who appears to need to know. If I thought he was going end up on the wrong side of the licensing laws I wouldn't have suggested he take that course of action.

Well, now you know that it's against the EULA to use a Windows XP component program on a Windows 2000 machine.

Does anyone care, including MS? Probably not. Should full disclosure be made when one recommends doing something? Absolutely.

So, in light of full disclosure, it's not legal to use MSCONFIG.EXE from Windows XP on a Windows 2000 machine, but nobody really cares in the end, so enjoy.

I do appologise (I mean that sincerely)... I should have stated the MS offered instructions on how to do this and so could hardly take action against someone following those instructions. I will take more care to qualify my advice in future.

I have a full time experience just getting to grips with all there is to know about computing without digesting the EULA in all it's detail. Good job someone knows it though.
