on a sun machine i have a samba 2.2.5
al of my 2000/xp pc's cannot login to the SUN
i have also windows98 which has no problem accesing, after i configured thie registry.

i was told that i dont need to change anything on the 2000/xp and i should change he samba smb.conf file.

is there anyone who had success with this?

we use samba all the time on our networks.

how is your samba set up ... have you tested that it works from the unix box?

is the version of samba on the box the sfw version?

do you have SWAT configured for use?

Jad,
i am more a "microsoft man" tha a unix, sp please forgive me: what is sfw version?

also, i m using SWAT

Here is a thread I posted a while back about a similar problem:

thread60-298034 did finally talk to SUN about it and in order to fix it, SAMBA needs to be upgraded. Our temporary workaround was to create the folders they needed via telnet, then save data in with Win2K. They seem to be able to save things, and change the data, but not change the name. SUN said it had something to do with ACL and Inodes.

I don't know if this helps you at all, but good luck.

the sfw version is the version that sits in /opt/sfw/bin
as opposed to your own (possibly /opt/samba/bin) or a package from somewhere else (/usr/local/samba/bin)

i'm assuming that since you have 2.2.5 that you compiled it yourself, and it is the latest version. and that you're running this in daemon mode 'smbd -D' and 'nmbd -D'

if swat is active, i take it you've created the shares, and the windows98 people are happy because their users exist on the system.

however windows98 doesn't authenticate in the same way as 2000/xp, and they don't usually actually log on to the server (correct me if i'm wrong in this case) so it is actually the ability to mount the home directories and grab profile data that is the problem.

do all the 2000 users exist on the Solaris box and have passwords entered into the smbpassword file? do their machines exist with the correct information in the /etc/passwd (or nis table if used)

did you follow the instructions for creating the primary domain controller?

etc. etc.

we don't have a PDC at this company at present, because we use old win31 and win95 machines without encrypted passwords, and this stops 2000/xp/NT from authenticating properly when logging on (samba is set for unencrypted passwords at our site)
