When i go to shut down windows 2000 from start and shut down it wont do it. It will just show a black screen and wont boot down.

Is this Win 2000 pro, and is it on a laptop or desktop?
I have had this problem with laptops, and many times it had to do with the sleep configuration. When all else fails, wait for the hard drive access to quit, and pull the plug! I have seen this happen when it is trying to close network connections that for some reason are not available. If this is a laptop, leave it connected to everything until it has shut down. Many times when the system seems to be hung, it is because applications were not closed before telling it to shut down (it should be able to shut these down, but sometimes balks). Try shutting all apps before shutting down.
