I installed a lexmark printer via the usb port. When i install the printer software it won't detect the printer. I have tried to edit the registry hkey_local_machine\system\current_control_set\enum\usbprint|Lexmark. but windows won't let me delete the file ( i am logged in as an administrator). I can not remove the printer via the control panel. Any suggestions?

Well,

How weird is that? I thought that kind of stuff only happened to me.

I can say that I've been locked out of accessing/deleting files, etc... before. I "logged out" vs. restarting- then logged back in to gain access- you could try that.

What shows in device manager for your printer- any drivers? Or does it show at all when it's hooked up? Can you remove via device manager? Does your printer want some part of it's software installed before the printer is physically hooked up?

Just trying to toss out some thoughts- maybe if they don't work directly, it'll inspire you to continue your search. Last step, of course, is emailing/calling Lexmark.

Good luck!

The printer does not show up in my control panel/printer file. I have tried logging off and restarting as well. According to the printer instructions I need to cancel the autodetect screen and install the printer. I tried reinstalling the printer and the software asks me to add another copy or reinstall on top ot the current driver. I'm lost.

Does it show in "device manager"- not control panel?

What model printer? What are your system specs?

lexmark z65 running windows 2000 professional.

My usual answer is "system restore" to before anything was altered (XP)- 2000 doesn't have this nice feature, though. You could try "last good configuration"- but I'm not familiar with the settings that may change with that- just an idea.

I looked at your manual on Lexmark's site & tried some searches but came up empty. It is a mystery just why what should be the easiest of all hook-ups has gone so bad for you.

There needs to be a full & complete removal of anything to do with this printer & it's drivers before proceeding again- that is certain. After going through the usual processes of "search & destroy" on this, go to:

& d/l the powertool to remove any traces from your registry.

Then get the brand-newest 2000 driver for USB from Lexmark. If they make no distiction between parallel & USB I'd send an email or call to verify what to do.

Hope you get this figured out & can post back your success.

I had the same problem before, so if you haven't figured out how to go about this yet, here's the "easiest" way to do it.

Here's how I did it:

1) run REGEDT32.EXE (!)
2) proceed to the registry entry that you wanted to delete. (now, just the same you still cannot delete the entry just yet. read on!)
3) REGEDT32 has a bit more "power" than REGEDIT in that it has this "Security" menu. Click on it then click "Permissions..."
4) I believe now you know what to do next. Funny though... Administrators do have some limitations I guess... =)

I hope this works/helps!
