I have Aloha running on 2000 Server. EDC running SSL. All is fine until the router locks up. Backup modem is installed on Com 1. Error in EDC shows "failed to initialize Com 1. Under device manager com 1 shows up ok. I need to update driver and this seems to work for a short time. At some point something is "blowing out the port" Not sure what. Does anyone have an idea of what can just make a working com port suddenly not work. Also, any recommendations on a good reliable router? This site is using Lynksys Etherfast and after googling it found lockups to be a common problem with this type.

I would try setting the Modem for another com port, if you have any kind video capture or even if alohaspy is running you could have the modem kicked off line. Zoom makes a usb modem that I have had a lot of luck with in the past year.

Try upgrading to the linksys RV82 with VPN, the VPN is not need but unit itself is more robust.

If you really want to go all out look at the sonicwall TZ80 ot TZ90 but you are going to pay for it and I think it is over kill.
