Hi everyone. On some occasions I have been into the Services MMC snap-in and some of the services have appeared to have frozen. What I mean when I say this is that I can't stop, restart or start them. This has just happened to me this morning after I rebooted the server. How do I go about getting around this if these services need to be restarted or started since they haven't started correctly?? I know you can use command line switches but I don't know the service names for the command prompt.

Also, after a long period of time if something stops responding in services and I stop it and start it, it won't restart correctly and I just get an error saying it didn't respond in a timely fashion. Normally I end up rebooting the server due to this. Is there anything else I can do to get the service to respond correctly when it is told to start again??

Thanks in advance.

I would try to reinstall SP first. Sometimes this helps. Could you list what services are freezing up also. Thanks

Do you have all the patches? Sure your not infected? What's in the log files? Glen A. Johnson

Currently the server is still on it's original SP so perhaps it will be worth my while to run the latest SP on it. I was just weary of doing this because there are quite a few SP downloads to choose from and I wasn't sure of the best way to go about it.

I'll take another look today. The services that freeze are mostly ones like the Exchange services (MTA, POP, Routing Engine etc) which will freeze after a few days and I'll end up having to reboot the server. At the moment Terminal Services has frozen (it's working, but the buttons are all grayed out so I can't start it and stop it). I'm positive we're not infected as I update the AV software every morning on top of an automatic update in the early hours of the morning. We use Sophos AV and I know it works correctly.

Make sure you run hfnetchk and get all the patches also. Glen A. Johnson

i disagree with installing every update there is. Only install SP2 for Windows 2000 to start with and the security patches. Only download the patches that pertain to what you are using the box for. Also keep in mind that if you run SP2 for Exchange 2000 that there are some issues when restoring a backup from pre-SP2 stores
this article should help you with exchange SP2 issues
hope this helps Thanks

ErikButler is right. I didn't make myself clear enough. We don't use Exchange, so I don't download anything for exchange. Download only things needed for what you are using. Sometimes you've gotta slap me along side the head to get it working again. Don't bother downloading anything that doesn't fix what your'e using. Glen A. Johnson

Will I need to back things up before running the SP2 update ie shared files, Exchange 2000 Store etc??

Kind of an off-topic but goes along with the Exchange stuff.
OnTrack just released a program called "PowerControls" that apparently will pull mailboxes, etc out of an unmounted Exchange .edb file and either pop it into another server or put it into a .pst file. Like I said, off topic but a note nevertheless.
