Can you please help me with a few matters relating to windows 2000 Advanced Server and Windows XP Pro.

I have a small network set-up with the above PC’s, I created a Domain on the Windows 2000 PC, and then tried to create new logins, however I was unable to as the Server PC stated that it was a domain controller in Computer manager, and I was unable to make up new users, I then removed the Domain and could then make up new users (which I want to log onto the server PC from the XP PC), however I am only able to log onto the Wins XP PC as the administrator.

Then when I access the server PC from the network places, I then have to logon as the user I have created on the server PC after clicking on the server PC icon, why can’t I just log onto the server with the main username and password which I have created when I boot-up the XP PC?

Also I am only able to access printers and faxes, and scheduled tasks from the server PC on the XP PC, and I have shared out more folders.

I have also tried to connect to the XP PC from the server so that I can access the Internet, without any success.

I hope the above makes sense, and I’m sorry I have asked so many questions, but I’ve been trying to sort this out all day, without any success.

Best wishes,

Joanne

You most likely tried to create new users in the same way before you made it a domain controller. Once you change the server into a domain controller, you can't just right click my computer, manage, and add users to the users and groups. You find a big red X through it. To add users, you use a different interface....

start>programs>administrative tools>active directory users and computers.

It works basically the same but with lots of additional features and groups. Remember, you are running a domain, not a workgroup. Your other computers will need to join the domain, too. Go to the other computer and right click my computer, properties, then the network identification tab. There you will find the option to join the domain for the other computers. Once joined, you can log into the domain from them with any domain accounts you create on the domain controller.

You have done two things.

1. created a domain.

2. removed the domain and created a workgroup.

Difference between the two, domain is central administration where as workgroup is local administation. That being said, when you had a Domain, the server doesn't use a local user account (nor retains a local security database) it uses Active Directory. You should have used the AD USers and Computers to add user acounts. Then joined the XP clients to the domain.

What you have now is a workgroup. So each computer must have identical user accounts for each user to access share/printers/files without having to specify username and password. If the accounts don't match, create identical accounts. Thus decentralized administration.
