We recently upgraded our Domino server from Windows NT 4.0 Server to Windows 2000 server. We moved the Domino folder and all related files and folders to another server and installed Windows 2000 clean. When then installed Domino back on the new server but did not run the setup program. We then copied the old Domino directory back to the new server and everything appeared to be working fine. Now users complain that it take an inordinate amount of time to open 1MB+ email attachments when before it took no time at all. Any idea what we may have missed or what we can check to rectify the problem?

I recently upgraded my server to Win2K and had no issues. Here is what I did.

*Make a full backup of all the Notes Folders.
*Perform the Win2K upgrade.
*Re-install the Domino Server. Install it as a service.
*Once Domino is installed, stop the service
*Restore files from your backup as follows:
*In the root of data... don't restore anything without an extension of .nsf but restore all of the NSFs except for busytime.nsf, catalog.nsf, and webadmin.nsf. The busytime, catalog, and webadmin will rebuild themselves with the latest versions.
*Restore the entire hierarchy of folders under \Data without their full-text indexes (they'll rebuild on the new server)

Basically you're reinstalling the Domino server and restoring all your original database.

Another thing I've heard is that you should install the Program files on one drive and the data onto another. Haven't tried it but it makes sense to share the access load.

What version of Domino are you running?

If you are running anything below 5.0.8a, you will pretty much have bad and slow results.

As far as your migration technique goes... that is how I have always done it.

Remember too, if you migrate your sever all the way up to 5.0.12 or 6.x, you will need to be at SP3 on W2k.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Maybe you also need to check your server and network resources. W2K takes a lot more resources then NT4.0

Is your W2K server configured correctly? Does it give priority on foreground or background requests? How much memory does the machine have, how many users are on it and what is the connection speed?

Is Active Directory and DNS working properly?
Did you consider installing a WinS server to reduce broadcasts from W95/98 clients on your network?

All these -and many other- things can influence the performance of a W2K network. So it is not necessarily the Domino server itself that is slower.

I did similar upgrades in the past and never had a performance drop.

So I would recommend you first to check if it is the OS and network that causes the slow down or is there something wrong with Domino?

Kind regards,
