I tried to install windows 2000 server on a PC with Windows XP Home Edition for a dual boot. But i couldn't succeed as Windows XP OS is new and windows 2000 server cann't be installed, when a new version of os is present.

As a result i installed windows 98 or windows me first. Followed by windows 2000 server in second partion of HDD.And finally upgraded Windows98 ro Windows ME to Windows XP.

Is there way whereby i can install windows 2000 Server even after installing Windows XP home edition or professional for a dual boot.

You should be installing the OSs on different partiontions. Windows is known for not being able to go backwards if you like in the installation of OSs but if you are logged in as the Administrator in XP, drop in the Windows 2000 Server cd and in should auto start. In the installation process there will be an option to start a clean install or upgrade. Choose the clean install. When it ask you where you could like to install the OS, the default is c:\winnt, choose the root of the second partiontion, i.e. d:\winnt. If this does not work then I can only suggest that you install Windows 2000 Server on c:\ and XP on e:\ if you have an e\. This is a better way of doing it anyway as you will find out when installing a W2KServer as a PDC and Active Directory.
