Hi All,

I need some help with a Windows 2000 Domain running Active Directory & DNS! My browser list never shows the list of machines in my domain. I have installed a backup DNS Server and that didn't help either. I have also tryed a WINS Server and the Workstations appear if you reboot them but after 30 minutes they all disappear! I have the clients using DHCP so they get automatically assigned their IP, Subnet, Gateway, DNS. WINS etc! Please Help!

If you type in their UNC Path you see them no problem!

Thanks

Daniel

Daniel,

The First area I would look at since you are not having any problem with connections to your network would be Anti-Virus software. What AV are you running? We've had problems with Norton & Trend Micro causing this problem with the browser. Can you do a net view from the command prompt? How about Browstat? Can you see any clients from the Server?
This is hopefully a step in the right direction.

I have checked Virus software on these machines and the Secondary DC has Trend ScanMail installed. The Workstations and other servers are running InoculateIT. I tryed the net view command but could only see the few machines that were listed! I cannot find the browstat command and would like to find this so I can use it to find out which server thinks it is the master browser! Please Help me some more

HI Hobbsie

Browstat is in the win2000 support tools.

Check you have computer browser service running on pcs.

Remember DNS is not involved in computer browsing - WINS, broadcasts or lmhosts required.

What node type are your clients running under? Check under ipconfig /all or in the scope option for wins under dhcp. Hybrid is usually recommended.

If your WINS server is runnning ok and clients have computer browser service running - all should be ok.
Are all your clients on single subnet ?

Focus on getting WINS functioning correctly and the clients have that server correctly assigned and all should be fine.
Personally don't like WINS - I'd publish stuff in the AD and 'browse' resources through this - but that's just me :)

Cheers

Hi Welshguy,

I that a Windows 2000 only domain uses dynamic DNS Only and only a mixed mode network needs WINS for NT Server's and Workstations? I am running 0x8 Hybrid for the WINS! WINS is running fine! I have a list of clients but no browser list!

Where can I get Windows 2000 support tools from?

How do you publish machines and their shares in AD? I dont like WINS Either!

Thanks

Sorry should have added - use browstat - find out which is your master browser then check to see if it is registered in WINS.

You must have a master browser registered in each subnet - if it's not there add it manually.

Hi,

I have used Browstat and found out that the master is correct but the backup is the same Machine as the master! How do I make another server the backup browser??

Please Help

Daniel
