Hi Everyone

I would like to know which is the best Windows 2000 Server Book to get for error information event id. and all around resource. We have a server (500 mhtz. celeron processor with Windows 2000 Server on it with all the normal literature)that we got from a consultant in exchange for some work. (My boss's idea, not mine.) They were upgrading to to 2005 and a lot faster machine. We had a 500 pentium with a small hard drive (20 gigs.) and NT 4.0 Server OS. We still have all the literature and extra resource books from that. I would like to know if the old NT 4.0 resource books are good enough to use or should we upgrade tho's also. As you can tell by my handle that I'm new at this server stuff. Any hints? Thanks

Windows 2000 and NT are worlds apart, almost nothing in that NT book that will do you any good with 2k. Google is your best friend when it comes to just about anything from event ids or how to configure AD, i wouldnt waste my money on a book for 2k. Not sure i would get to wrapped up in an OS thats almost reached its end of life either, be a better use of your time to pickup a 2003 server book. Not sure what you expect to get out of that box either, a celeron 500 would probably make a better door stop or boat anchor than a server in this day and age. However if you only want to use it as a learning tool it should be good enough to teach you the major differences between NT and 2k which would be benificial when you make it to 2k3.

Just my 2 cents,

I have several Server 2k books. Some times you can pick them up from a used book store. MS press has several out but the Sybex book is an easier read.

Books can be good for off-line reading, but most of the good information will be found online for free. For example, if you're looking for EventID information, I would suggest you check out Some web sites that provide good information for both 2000 and 2003 include:

And Microsoft's technet site still has LARGE amounts of data on 2000 available on it's web site.

Note: 2000 and 2003 are similar enough that reading material for one will often (but definitely not always) have significance to the other. But NT is WAY out of date with very little similar between NT and 2000/2003. If you don't have any NT boxes left, you can pretty much use those books as kindling.

Yes, Windows IT Pro is fantastic - and not just a web site. When I left my day job to be a consultant, it's the only magazine I bothered to pay for a subscription for.
