I've read a little about the mail() function, but I don't fully understand it.

How does it work? Do you need to purchase any special software to send email by this function or will it simply tap into the default email system and use that?

Thanks Shane Brennan

deppends on the operating system you use. If you use Linux you can use the linux sendmail tool to send the mail. If you use windows, if you can use a SMTP you don't need software, if not, you have to buy or search for software to do SMTP (like M$ Exchange).
