Frequently I get an error message that reads:

"The application failed to initialize because the windows stations is shutting down." This is a DrWtsn32.exe dll initialization failure.

I have to say ok, and then say cancel before windows shut down.

This happens quite frequently.

What do I do?

From what ive read on a few searches , this is caused by an application being started right before the windows shuts down.

What all programs do you have running at startup? When is the last time you ran chkdsk and defrag? What antivirus and antispyware scans have you ran?

I judiciously run Defrag about twice per month. I ran Chkdsk/r which shows "volume clean".
I have the following Task Mgr screens running:

System Idle Process
System
smss.exe
crss.exe
winlogon.exe
services.exe
lsass.exe
svchost.exe
spools.exe
ispace.exe
mscvre.exe
regserv.exe
mstask.exe
stisvc.exe
winmgmt.exe
vetmsg.exe
explorer.exe
soundman.exe
pdvidser.exe
cavtray.exe

ycommon.exe
ipclient.exe
mpbtn.exe
motivesb.exe
picasamediadet
sbhooksvc.exe
rsvp.exe
winword.exe
justsked.exe

I am also running Yahoo. Online Protection.

I use Firefox mainly as browser but have of course IE loaded and Yahoo via SBCglobal.net

Thanks for your help.

Give me your list in msconfig if you will. Go to start, run, type msconfig, click the startup tab and type every item that is checked. Only the items not the locations

Uncheck these

nwiz
soundman
nerocheck
powdserv
jusched
citiucs
ipclient
ipmon32
motivesb
adobe reader speed launch
microsoft office

hit apply , then close/ok and restart the computer. When you load back up it will say system configuration utility has been used, just check the box for it to never show again and hit ok. Then restart a couple of times and see if the error returns.

Your the man, Jason..!!!!

The shutdown is running beautifully......It has been a very frustrating experience for an old dude. I have been trying to learn how to understand all of this since I retired....Thanks, again.
