Why does disk cleanup take a lot longer in NTFS than in Fat32 in Windows 2000 professional? It stays in'scan: compress old files'for a while in NTFS, in Fat32 it is fast doing that step.

FAT32 doesn't have compression so it doesn't do this step. NTFS does and so DiskCleanup scans the file system for files with old access dates.

If you're comfortable with editing the registry use REGEDIT to go to...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress old files

...then delete all the entries at that point. Disk cleanup will speed along again since it has nothing to reference for "old files."

Feedback:

I exported the registry branch, jic, then followed busybill's procedure. Worked like a charm.

An alternative; in the 'run' box type 'cleanmgr /sageset:1', untick the compress old files, click OK, then 'run' 'Cleanmgr /sageset:1'. Cleans a few more items up, too. Maybe better run after the reg tweak above, would not need to untick.
