We have started installing new machines with Windows 2000 pro and are haveing a problem with the spelling checker not availalbe to regular users in word97 but they can use it in excel97. The Admin users have no problems the only fix we have found is to grant local admin rights to the network user but this is not something we would like to do.

The new machines are compaq deskpros and the hard drives are formated with fat32.

By default, users on the local machine are installed with restricted rights. They are therefore not able to modify files created by others. The way Word accesses this text file to add new words means that the checker does not work properly.

Give them Power User rights to the local machine or give that file full control to all users.

Thank you for your reply but Giving the users poweruser rights is not something we would do.

I did find the fix from Microsoft it is a registry edit to give user rights to the key for speller and grammer checker. I have attached the link to it but thank you for your reply.

I was having the same problem with our new Windows2000s. I also refuse to give the users, power user rights and was just about to check microsoftKB. Thanks for saving me time!
