WIndows 2000 printer prints garbage on startup

I have a Win2k machine that prints several 'U' characters to my HP LaserJet 4L upon system startup. Everything else seems fine. Sometimes it's 1 'U', sometimes it's 5. Not a big deal but I have to leave the paper tray out and then cancel the job on the printer or it wastes paper. Very annoying. I have deleted the printer in Windows and re-installed to no avail. Couldn't find anything on MS website. Any ideas??

Only thing I could think of is to reinstall new drivers. Also, when you try to print, are you using mail merge? Have you try printing to other printers?
