We wanted to upgrade from NT4 to Windows 2000 Server, but we've been told that the Compaq 6500 is simply not able to support Windows 2000 as it is only a 450mhz. Can anybody confirm this and advise on the best way to proceed, as I understand it's not possible to upgrade the processor as the only place offering this processor is in the States at a cost of around £1,000.

Thanks,

you can run W2K on a 6500:

i run W2K on proliant 1200's that have only a pII 233, and 320 MB ram

depends on the purpose of such a machine ,if you want to run SQL on it I suggest hardware upgrades or so, but if it is for fileserving or proxy or domain controller a 6500 will do fine

Like Bart said, W2k on your 6500 should run ok depending on what the server is to be used for. As long as you have enough RAM, you should be ok. Did anyone explain their reason for saying that W2k would not run on a 6500? Compaq certainly do as they support W2k drivers on 6500 machines. -----------------------------------------------------

Thanks everybody. Okay, this server is our main server and keeps all of our data files, plus an SQL Database for Primavera's Expedition project management software. The guys told us that it would be too slow for us to operate sufficiently.
Are they just trying to get more money out of us, I wonder?

Thanks again.

I'd ask them what they would consider a minimum specification for a server. See what they say (post back, might be worth a laugh). -----------------------------------------------------
