Windows 2000 domain, DNS, and setting up Exchange Server 2003

I am new to setting up windows server 2000. I need to deploy exchange server 2003, but am having some difficulty. While running through the checklist I ran across the dcdiag and netdiag tools. I was unable to successfully run them because my server does not have a domain controller. I'm not exactly sure what that is or how to fix it, but I do know that I never setup a domain on this server.

So, my question is:
1)How do I setup my server on a domain
2)Is a DNS server or active directory related at all?
3)If I have multiple servers running, how do you configure them all to run together on the same domain, or would you configure it a different way.

Thanks for the help. I am a software developer who has been forced into a network admin role.

Those tools are for checking the health of domain controlers and should not be needed if you are setting up a standalone exchange server. If however you cannot have a standalone exchange box then you will need to make your server a domain controller.
