I currently have a 2000 domain, i run the forestprep and domain prep of the 2003 media to update my schema to support 2003. I have a few 2003 sp1 domain controllers and don't have a problem. when i try to added a 2003 sp2 domain controller, dcpromo runs completely without errors. but replications doens't work and the domain controller will not authenticate logins. is there something different that must be done to support sp2.

Is it 2003 R2? You have to run the prep's from CD2 of the R2 discs.

i have other locations that are domain controllers with 2003 rc2 sp1 and don't have a problem. Seems to only be related to sp2.

That's nice, but if you want me to help, or others for that matter, if we ask you a question, it's the polite and proper thing to do, if you want our assistance, to answer the questions we pose back to you.

Now, is it R2? Not RC2, R2? And if it is, did you run the preps from the 2nd CD of the R2 discs?

yes it is R2, I didn't run the prep's on the second cd.

What must be run?

Thanks for the help

You have to run them from that CD. If you'll look on the CD you'll see the folder that the adprep is in...can't recall it directly.

found the files. but it says both adprep/forestpret and adprep/domainprep have already been run.

dsquery * cn=schema,cn=configuration,dc=yourrootdomainname -scope base -attr objectversion

The above will give you the schema version, should be set to 31 after running adprep from r2 cd 2.

on the 2nd r2 cd adprep is located in cmpnents\r2\adprep is that the adprep you ran??

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

this problem turned out to be a bad attribute on the domain controller object in AD. Guess this happened during the promotion of the domain controller.

Fixed the useraccountcontrol value, reset the secure password and booted.

thanks for the help
