what steps can I take to grant someone remote access to our server. We have
microsoft server 2000..

Install Terminal Services.

If the person you are referring to is to be an Admin, then select Adminsitrative Mode. if the person is a user, then you will want to select Application Sharing Mode. You will then also need to install Terminal Services Licensing and will need to purchase CALs.

There is no need to install the licensing or to purchase CALs if running in Admin mode.

you can add terminal services via Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Components.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

we have tried to go a simpler route which is currently not working.(probably not
the right route.) We are trying to give a vendor remote desktop access to a
certain folder on our server. The vendor keeps getting this error:

DUNS ERROR 800

800 - Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be
un-reachable, or security parameters may not be configured properly for this
connection.

This error may occur if a Virtual Private Network connection is specified, but
fails to authenticate. See this Microsoft how-to article on using Virtual
Private Networks for Secure Internet Data Transfer.

IF you could please help. :)

This is drastically different than your original post. You might want to repost your question asking for help with a VPN to get more eyes on this.

Have you run the RRAS wizard to configure the server for VPN access? Do you have a firwall in place? Have posts been opened for the VPN?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
