Hi,

I got this message from the snap server log: "SMB : Can't resolve master browser IP address for domain CMWD". I can not see this snap server from browsing but I can http into it. Please help.

Thanks

Kevin

When I had Snap servers it would have issues with NetBIOS name resolution/browsing, usually a reset of the Snap serverwould solve the problem.

It is probably related to your DC failing. Do you still have DNS up and running from another server?

It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

ditto on simply restarting snap server. May want to check your network settings in the web interface first.

I restarted the snap server 5 times already, and I still get the error. No the other server is gone from the domain. I'll have to rebuild this today.

Thanks,

Kevin

Davetoo,

Now, I can not even browse a share drive on the DC. I got this error message: error occured while reconnecting to the "share drive" local device name is already in use, this connection has been restored. I was able to browse about 1 hr ago.

Thanks,

Kevin

Davetoo,

When my main DC crashed, the other DC (with exchange on it) took over the role as DC but does not have DHCP, do I need to install DHCP on this new DC?

Thanks,

Kevin Nguyen

If you don't have a DHCP server and need one, then yes, you'll have to install and configure the DHCP service on a server. But the Snap box should have a static IP does it not?

Ah, it's becoming clearer now. obviously Davetoo has more information about your sitiation that the rest of us. Without a DHCP Server, DHCP clients will not be able to get or renew addresses. If you had a WINS server (for NetBIOS browsing) installed on the DC that failed, that may be causing your problems with browsing. I suspect that's the case since you can get to the web interface, but cannot "browse" to the snap server.

Ok, here is a new development, my main DC came back to life but it is no longer DC on the domain. Since it got a new computer name, instead of computer A now it computer B. I can not change the name back to A. Since, IP address is the same and DHCP is installed on this machine when it is on, users can connect to the network. Now, my new question is can I run DCPROMO in this machine to promote it as DC, with the existing DHCP and WINS setup on it. I know this machine is handling out ip address because when I turn it off no one can log-on.

Thanks,

Kevin Nguyen

How is it now suddenly not a DC? In your ADUC, the DC OU does it contain the name of the computer before it failed?

Hi Davetoo,

Snap box had static ip address, that why I can connect to it via browser but can not see it on the network as name. All of my servers and pc are showing on the network. Can I run 2 DHCP and 2 WINS on 2 DC or no?

Yes, the DC OU contain name of the computer before it failed. When I got it back, it is no longer the same name. When I tried to rename it back to orginal name, it said that the name already exist. By the way, I can not remove this server from the Domain.

Maybe you posted this info elsewhere, but why did the name change? You should be able to dcpromo this server with WINS and DHCP already installed with no problem.

I do not know why the name changed, I do know that the server required a "fixmbr" and I had to replace systemced file for it to boot up again. I know all this has been crazy. Thanks,
