After logging in it displays a blank blue screen. ctr+alt+del is not working and and when shut down it behaves the same way. When I start it with the LAN unplugged it displays the desktop normally. Plugging in the LAN, the clients fail to access the database in the server hence have to restart with LAN plugged in. The problem returns. am running windowa server 2003 enterprise edition on an IBM server.
Any suggestion?

What if you created a second ADMINISTRATOR user (admin2) and try logging in as that user to troubleshoot corrupted profile or log in as another user on the server if you already have one.

Have you had a functioning anti-virus on the server continuously?

Why don't you start from the top:
1. Boot to a CD that can test the memory of the server (memtest86+)
2. Then boot the server and run some malware scans on it: MalwareByte's Anti-Malware, Rogue Killer, TDSS Killer Just be careful of letting it repair things until you review the results and be sure your data and preferably the entire server (image backup) is backed up.

So really, step 0 should be a backup as a CYA. This could be anything - hardware problem, windows corruption, malware

There's a known issue with 2k3 display drivers on vmware causing no display or very slow response.

Have you tried updating the display and NIC drivers with the latest ones from IBM?

Biglebowskis Razor - with all things being equal if you still can't find the answer have a shave and go down the pub.
