Window Logon "restarts" PC

I did a clean install of Windows 2000 Professional on a PC. I get the logon on screen; I put in the correct password; it brings up the desktop--and then the system restarts.

Sometimes, I have to make two to four attempts before getting the full desktop without a restart.

I'm stumped. I've never seen this before. Any ideas?

did you check the event log? Could be a faulty driver of some kind.
