I am having a problem trying to install Windows XP on a windows 98 machine, that is using Promise Ultra 133 Tx2 IDE Controller drivers. How can get the current drivers I need to install XP?
Near the beggining of the upgrade, you will see "Press F6 to install xxxxx drivers". If this doesn't come up, you may have to do a clean install of XP. A clean install is always recommended anyway, any problems you had with 98 will be compounded by XP. Have you done the Microsoft check to see if your system is ready for an upgrade? If not, you may get into the middle of the install - lockup - and lose BOTH systems!
Backup the files you want to save from your system now, then make a boot disk and in the system root folder, copy the file format.com to the boot disk. Next, restart the system with the boot floppy in and when you get to the dos section, you should be at an A:\>. If not, type "a:" and hit enter. Next type "format c:".
When it finishes formatting the hard drive, put the Win XP disk in and go through the installation.
To install a new OS as an upgrade almost always has problems, and will eventually crash and force you to install fresh anyway.

A question, is this a seperate controller card or just the name of the IDE drivers for your motherboard? If it's just your stock drivers, ignore what I wrote the first time, do a straight installation as per Smar969905. If you use an "update" disk for a full install you will need the original Win98 CD. I don't know how it goes, since all I do is full installs. (I don't like to have my clients to have anymore problems than necessary!). Since you are using "old" parts, I would install XP with as few boards as possible. That way, if there is problem, it won't screw up the system install. As you add boards back in, you may find conflicts - you can back off then, and not damage the installation.
